Fermentation Engineer

We are seeking a bioprocess engineer to develop fermentation and downstream processing (DSP) protocols to produce microbially-derived polysaccharides. This candidate will have the opportunity to build fermentation capability from the ground up: bioreactor acquisition, set up, operation, and process development. The candidate will also be responsible for design and refinement of large-scale product purification and improvement of DSP protocols. 

 

An ideal candidate will have experience operating bench scale and larger bioreactors for the cultivation of microbes. They will be self-motivated, independent, and proficient in communication with an interdisciplinary team of scientists. Experience or interest in molecular biology is also preferred, as the candidate may have the opportunity to assist directly in strain development and engineering. Responsibilities:

• Purchase, setup, and operation of bench scale bioreactors

• Experimental design to achieve optimal titer and yield during fermentation

• Isolation of biopolymers from fermentation broth and optimization of current protocols

• Other limited tasks: molecular biology for strain improvement, formulation, and product testing

 

Requirements:

• BS/MS in bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, microbiology, or related fields

• 2+ years of practical or industrial experience

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Experience in fermentation-based process development for microbial products

• Familiarity with microbiology and chemistry, experience with aseptic technique and buffer and media preparation

• Experience with molecular biology is preferred
